Rhodium, as an extremely rare and highly valuable precious metal, its recovery and refining process requires not only delicate technical operations, but also strict environmental standards. The process involves multiple steps aimed at extracting pure rhodium metal from various rhodium-containing wastes for reuse.

Rhodium recovery process

  1. Collect rhodium-containing materials:
The first step in recovering rhodium is to collect rhodium-containing materials, which are mainly from discarded catalytic converters, electronic equipment, medical devices, etc. Because the amount of rhodium used is usually small, it takes a large amount of scrap to collect enough rhodium for refining.
  2. Preliminary treatment:
The collected rhodium-containing material is subject to preliminary treatment, such as physical disassembly and chemical pretreatment, in order to separate out the parts with higher rhodium content. For catalytic converters, this means extracting rhodium-containing powders from ceramic carriers.
  3. Chemical leaching:
After the initial treatment, it is followed by a chemical leaching process in which rhodium is dissolved from other substances by specific chemical solvents. Common chemical solvents include strong acids such as aqua regia, and this step requires strict control of reaction conditions to maximize rhodium extraction rates.

Rhodium refining process

  1. Purification:
In the solution obtained from the chemical leaching process, rhodium is also mixed with other metal impurities. Through a series of chemical reactions, such as precipitation, filtration and extraction, rhodium is separated from these impurities to improve the purity of rhodium.
  2. Metal extraction:
The purified rhodium usually exists as a compound and needs to be converted into a metal form by a reduction reaction. This step can be carried out by heating or electrochemical reduction, etc., to finally obtain pure metal rhodium.

Refining rhodium requirements

  1. Safety requirements:
The chemicals used in rhodium recovery and refining are very dangerous, so operators must take appropriate safety measures, including wearing personal protective equipment and operating in a well-ventilated environment.
  2. Environmental requirements:
Chemical reactions can produce harmful waste gases and wastewater, which must be treated in strict accordance with environmental standards to ensure that recycling activities do not have a negative impact on the environment.
  3. Technical requirements:
Recycling and refining rhodium requires specialized technical knowledge and equipment, including chemical processing, metal extraction and purification technologies. Operators should have the relevant chemical and material science knowledge to ensure the efficiency and safety of the refining process.

All in all, rhodium recovery and refining is a complex but extremely important process. It not only helps to reduce the dependence on natural resources, but also promotes the recycling of resources, which is of great significance for environmental protection and sustainable development.
